Stranger in the Night

record playing
in the other room
Sinatra sang
"Strangers In The Night"
as our papa
was becoming one to us

taking off to the
sea of a big apple
without too much warning.
mami, abuela and his
beloved daughters
would be left behind
while he left on one of
his maniac journeys.

silent prayers whispered
to Our Lady of Charity,

abuela made the sign of the cross
over our little foreheads.

dark lady made of clay,
dressed in a fine long
jeweled gown,
sitting on the mantle piece
of our living room.

three men
lost at sea
kneeled on their little boat
salvaged from
the raging storm.

yellow flowers
placed carefully in a vase.
one candle lit

our prayers were answered
when the door was opened
and the wind blew out the candle

my poet pauper player father
appeared at our front door.
trench coat and hat,
stuffed tiger and two dolls
for his daughters.
