Stranger in the Night

Sinatra sang
"Strangers In The Night"
as our papa
was becoming one to us
taking off to the
sea of a big apple
without too much warning.
mami, abuela and his
beloved daughters
would be left behind
while he left on one of
his maniac journeys.
silent prayers whispered
to Our Lady of Charity,
Cuba's patron saint,
abuela made the sign of the cross
over our little foreheads.
dark lady made of clay,
dressed in a fine long
jeweled gown,
sitting on the mantle piece
of our living room.
three men
lost at sea
kneeled on their little boat
salvaged from
the raging storm.
yellow flowers
placed carefully in a vase.
one candle lit
our prayers were answered
when the door was opened
and the wind blew out the candle
my poet pauper player father
appeared at our front door.
trench coat and hat,
stuffed tiger and two dolls
for his daughters.
