Printer Woes

By:  Jon Felix

They seem to break when we need them the most.  Our life savers break in numbers and they also break our pocket book.  Who are these beasts that we so dearly need?  Why its our printers for our personal computer.  Often we rely on these instruments too much and when they break don't have a plentiful amount of choices to pursue other than buy another printer.  Not to despair, there are a few things that can be done prior to determining a printer is no longer useable.

1) Turn it off and open the lid of the printer to see if any paper or documents got stuck inside the printer.

2) Check to make sure the setting on the paper tray is at letter rather than A4 or another setting that most people really don't use unless they are desktop publishers.

3) When was the last time you have purchased ink for the printer?

4) Often when a printer prints a bunch of characters on the paper it means that the printer has lost communication between the printer and computer.  Try unplugging and plugging the parallel cable back in, make sure it is secure and try again.  If its still giving you problems try purchasing another cable.

5) If its making any weird loud crunching noises, the printer will most likely need to be repaired or replaced.

6) Consult the printer manufacture, many times they carry a warranty on your printer and will replace it in exchange for your broken one.  They also sometimes offer free technical support, however, many are beginning to charge as much as $90 an incident for support.

The best thing to do however to preserve the life of a printer is to regularly clean the print rollers and to have on hand extra ink and a parallel cable.  It will relieve alot of last minute document headaches.
